Summer Newsletter – 2010
This year the Monsoons have struck the Himalayan region with much intensity. For many, the heavy rains have caused much damage and tragedy while for some, it is a welcomed blessing for the crops.
TWS students, teachers and staff celebrated two much loved spring festivals, Losar (Tibetan & Sherpa New Year) and Shivaratri in February for the last time at our old school premises. TWS students lit butter lamps, offered khadas (auspicious white scarves), khapsey (fried cookies) and fruit to the Buddha. During the Shivaratri festival the children danced and sang heartily around the bonfire as they roasted potatoes and enjoyed traditional sweets.

The school year 2066 (Nepali Calendar) ended on March 26th, 2010. As is customary, we celebrated the end of the school year with performances from every kindergarten group and the grade classes, 1, 2 and 3. Kindergarten pupils performed the play “The Giant Turnip”. The children were very excited dressing up in their wonderful costumes.

Class One performed the drama “The Pancake”. Class Two played the flute and performed “Ruk ko Nam Ke Ho” or “What’s the Name of the Tree”.

The graduating Class 3 played beautifully on the Sarangi (Nepali violin) and play acted the drama,
“The Elf’s Cap”.
We have some exciting news to share. We are happy to report that our school has moved to a new location at the end of March, 2010. Our new location is very close to the Ring Road (Maharajganj Chakrapath).

TWS began operation at the new site from the beginning of the new school year in May, 2010.

Please see pictures of our school in the beautiful new premises.
During the first term in June, Ms Lobsang took Class 2 on a Field Trip to the 2000 year old Buddhist site, Swayambhu Stupa, also known as Monkey Temple in connection with their class study of “Lord Buddha”. Class 2 is studying “Legendary and Historic Personalities of the World” this term.

Also in June, Mr Amrit Kansakar took Class 3 on a Field Trip to the “Reclining Vishnu Temple” in connection with their class study of the Creation Story; Das Avatar (Hindu creation stories). The students enjoyed sketching the ancient and sacred sculpture.

A large number of parents and teachers attended and participated in the Parents’ Day activities. Ms Chandra who is TWS’ most experienced Waldorf teacher led the discussions on Waldorf Pedagogy and its visionary founder, Rudolf Steiner. The teachers observed that more and more parents appreciate Waldorf education as they find conventional education very regimented and strict for their children.
Our First Term ended on July 16 ‘10. The TWS students again celebrated the end of term with song and dance from each class from nursery, kindergarten to classes 1, 2 and 3.
Gautam Lopchan, graduated from Tashi Waldorf School’s Class 3 in 2004. With academic remedial preparatory tuition at TWS and also at home, he attended Trungram Academy in Kathmandu. Now Gautam is in class 9 at Himali Boarding School in Kurseong, Darjeeling district, India. He is most happy to visit TWS where he found his teachers to be never strict but friendly and kind hearted.
Buddha Lopchan, graduated from TWS Class 3 in 2005. He is now attending Himali Boarding School in Kurseong with his brother, Gautam. He’s found the transition difficult especially in English and Mathematics. He is taking extra remedial tuition in Mathematics at home to improve in the subject. Buddha says he gets a nice feeling when he visits TWS. He likes TWS’ new location which is closer to town.
Maitrie Lopchan, graduated in 2008 from TWS where he was one of the best students. He is now in class 5 at Chandbagh School where he’s doing very well especially in physical education, performance arts, art and handwork. Maitrie remembers the happy times at TWS.
We send our gratitude to all our very generous friends who have given us their time, money and expertise. The TWS faculty and staff would like to thank the many kind visitors who have donated much Steiner educational materials to TWS, such as colored felt, beeswax, and block crayons, which are not available in Nepal. We also thank our hardworking volunteers and handicraft pashmina sellers, Arlene & Brenda, Barbara and Heather.
Many thanks also go to our kind visiting volunteers and teachers trainers.
With sincere thanks and best wishes for the rest of 2010!
