Tashi Waldorf School is located in the leafy suburbs of northern Kathmandu. It is an oasis of peace, calm, and clean air away from the bustle and pollution of the inner city. It provides a safe and nurturing environment in which the children can grow and learn. There is a wonderful view of the Himalayas and a beautiful valley woodland.
The main school building, originally a carpet factory constructed out of sheets of tin, has a nursery, three kindergartens, and a classroom for grade 1. The hall, located in the school building, is used for parents’ meetings, seminars and festival celebrations. Another two story building houses classrooms for grades 2 and 3 and a children’s library.
Other buildings on the property include a kitchen, toilet block, caretaker and storage building and a house. The house provides space for the school’s office and a classroom where special needs children receive extra lessons. The remainder of the house is used as a children’s home for children from Humla, one of the poorest regions in Nepal. The home is operated by the ISIS Foundation, headquartered in Bermuda. These children attend Tashi Waldorf School.
In the beginning, the school playground was a field of bare earth. It now is a haven with many bushes, flowers, and trees. There is a playhouse modeled on a traditional Nepalese village home complete with a mud oven. The children have a sandbox, swing, and climbing structure on which to play. The animal corner includes guinea pigs, rabbits, a cat, and two dogs. A compost area produces fertilizer for the garden. A field adjoining the school property provides space for the children to have a vegetable garden. |
